I recently embarked on a small journey back to the Yukon, and had the always lovely experience of chasing the midnight sun as it set, watching from my seat 30,000 feet in the air. Because I had arrived so late I didn’t do much that night though.

On Saturday morning, I dropped Chantelle off for her rafting excursion with her mom and I went on a solo exploration for the morning. I ventured down the Alaska Highway in pursuit of some elk (or any other wildlife I might encounter). Despite the foggy conditions making the drive a little slower, I did manage to capture some captivating images and videos with my drone. Although I didn't encounter any elk, I did see signs of their presence (or some other hoofed animal) as well as numerous arctic ground squirrels scurrying around. On my return journey to Whitehorse, I made a stop near the Takhini River Campground to pass a bit more time, and in the hopes I might see at least one animal before heading into town, unfortunately it was mostly just campers.

Once I was back in Whitehorse, I basically headed directly to the skate park, where I ran in to several old friends and even captured some skateboarding photos reminiscent of my earlier days in Whitehorse. Perhaps I stayed at the park a little longer than planned, 8 hours longer than planned to be exact haha, but it was rewarding to push around again and to see old faces, even if my muscles disagreed the next day. In the evening, I picked up Chantelle after she had returned from her rafting trip, and together, we were fortunate to witness a breathtaking sunset with a magnificent rainbow, concluding the day on a high note.

Sunday presented a challenge as we had made a plan to hike Caribou mountain but I was nursing a minor leg injury from my extensive skateboarding session the previous day. Nonetheless, we head out in the early hours of the morning on our hike up Caribou Mountain near Carcross, Yukon. Going up I wasn’t feeling too bad, but the hike is quite steep, so I was having some concerns about if my legs were going to carry me back down the mountain later. We decided to call it when we hit a clearing that felt like a half way mark. Although we didn't reach the ridge, the views from our vantage point were nothing short of spectacular. As we marveled at Bennett Lake's scenic beauty, a flock of grouse walked by, while some hawks gracefully soared in the strong winds overhead.

With my flight scheduled for Monday evening, we had some spare hours to fill, and what better way to fill those hours than to make a quick visit to Miles Canyon. The river's swift currents and the warm sun were a great way to take in some of the final moments of a Yukon summer before hopping back home to Vancouver.
