For the first time on this trip we decided to sleep in and skip a sunrise. We wanted to grab some food but we still had the postcards to mail off, so we found a post office in Moab before grabbing some breakfast burritos and using the wifi. After breakfast we ventured along the Colorado River in search of some more petroglyphs, unfortunately we didn’t have any luck finding the ones found around there.

After striking out looking for the petroglyphs near Moab, we drove back to the “Island in the Sky” area of Canyonlands National Park. Our first stop was to go and see the ancient granary near Aztec Butte. The granaries were intentionally made to be hidden from passersby, so it’s kinda wild to think about how many other ones are potentially still hidden out in the desert.

Because one of the granaries were so close to the road we decided to skip the hike up Aztec Butte and try to see as much of the park as possible. Next up was Upheaval Dome.

Upheaval Dome is known for being a spot where either a meteorite had made impact with the Earth or it’s a salt dome created by the evaporation of ancient landlocked seas. I like the meteorite theory but both sound pretty cool. There were two view points you could hike to here, the first one took maybe 20 mins to get to and then another 20 mins to the second point.

After the hike to Upheaval Dome we took a lunch break before heading to the view points of Green River Overlook, Grandview Point and Buck Canyon. You can basically drive up to each of these view points with optional hikes to a different vantage point at most of them.

After several hours in the park, and it being one the hotter days of our trip, we decided to head back in to Moab for a quick nap before our long drive back to Salt Lake City. When we woke up we were greeted by a family of deer eating outside the van, it was a nice goodbye to Moab.

We hit another lightning storm on the way back to Salt Lake City and ended up parking in a Walmart parking lot for the night about an hour outside of S.L.C.

We didn’t do much the next day aside from some shopping downtown and getting ready for our flight back home. Overall Utah was a blast to explore for the week and left us with so many amazing memories.
